Penny was a very loving and caring person who loved life to its fullest. When she entered a room you knew she was there because her laughter would fill it to the brim. Her personality was immense and magnetic.
Penny and I were married on December 31, 2006 in Olympia WA with friends and family present. We had no children of our own but enjoyed the company of many nieces and nephews.
In March of 2015 Penny was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. She had a cough that would now go away for several months and was misdiagnosed several times. Once she was diagnosed by the hospital she was in surgery within hours. I almost lost her that night. We remained in the hospital for the next 6 weeks undergoing treatment. She received many different chemo medications and treatments over the next 2 years that were very hard for her, all the time worried about me and how I was doing. She remained very strong through all of this, never complaining or asking for anything. With all of this, she still kept a smile on her face and laughed as much as she could, even when I knew she wanted to cry.
During her treatment she asked me to make her a hat to help keep her warm as the chemo was stored chilled so it made her cold. I made her one and she loved it and others asked if i could make them one as well, and I did. I eventually made one for all the patients and staff of the clinic through the length of treatments she received. Knowing who I was, we discussed what I was going to do in her name after she had passed away. It felt weird but I wanted to be sure of what she wanted. We had decided on helping pay for much needed cancer medications for low income cancer patients as we had some problems even with good insurance. Once we figured that out she helped me pick out a Mustang to buy. We chose a 2009 V6 Vapor Silver.
On December 10, 2017 Penny passed away in our home and in my arms with most of her family present. At that moment, I thought my world was coming to an end. She was my wife, my best friend, my lover, my confidante and my soulmate.
Shortly after her passing, The Pennies For Penny Foundation was started and the mustang’s transformation began. The foundation is now a 501(c)3 organization and the Mustang, (MYPENNY) are both going strong and doing big things.
